In March 2024, I had the privilege of attending the GAF Roofing Academy at ABC Supply Co. in Burlingame, California. This intensive, week-long program provided invaluable hands-on experience and in-depth knowledge of best practices in roofing, particularly when utilizing GAF materials.
The curriculum was comprehensive, covering essential aspects of roofing installation and maintenance. We began with the installation of synthetic underlayment, a critical component that enhances the roof’s water resistance and durability. Proper application of this underlayment is vital, as it serves as the first line of defense against moisture infiltration.
A significant portion of the training focused on shingle installation. We learned the importance of starting with a full shingle sheet and meticulously adjusting the length of subsequent pieces to achieve a clean, uniform appearance. Attention to detail, such as maintaining a 1/4-inch gap from the starter row, was emphasized to ensure optimal performance and aesthetics.
The academy also delved into the intricacies of flashing techniques. We practiced step flashing for chimneys and roof-to-wall intersections, as well as the installation of drip and rake edge flashing. These methods are crucial for directing water away from vulnerable areas, thereby preventing leaks and extending the roof’s lifespan.
Ventilation was another critical topic. Proper roof ventilation regulates temperature and moisture levels within the attic, preventing issues like mold growth and structural damage. We explored various ventilation systems and their appropriate applications to maintain a balanced and healthy roof.
